Hello!
I'm new here. I've been browsing tons of forums for an idea of what to do. I was laid off from my job about 3 month ago. I've been looking for a job since then, but did not even get a single interview. I worked as a web designer for a publishing company for the last 5 years. Looks like forum.psychlinks.ca is an active forum with active members and may be someone has some experience working as a freelance web designer. May be "Contact Forum Administration" category is not the most appropriate for this question, but I want to try anyways to get some opinions before I go ahead with my life. I'm wondering if it is possible in the current economy to find work for a freelance web designer and make enough to pay for rent and groceries. I was able to find a small project on craigslist and I developed a website for a company. It was a small project and took me only a week to complete. I got paid $800 for 1 week of work which is not bad. Please people give me some ideas. I have 2 kids and my wife is out of work as well. Thank you in advance.

Hi Neil - glad you found us and welcome. :)

Sorry to here about your job loss. Have you considered temp agencies? I know many more people will be applying to them too but it may be worth a try.

If you haven't already done so you may want to take a look at your professional and personal life and see what tranferable skills you have. Parents usually have tons.

Glad you found us. :)

Hey welcome,

I don't know if this will help or not but I have a list of websites where you can look for freelance type jobs. Some one gave them to me so I could try to work from home but I can't compete with the other applicants as they have a little something called experience, which it sounds like you have plenty of.

I'm not to sure of the rules about posting other websites so I will try sending you the addresses in a personal message. I have about 6.

I hope one of them can help you out, or you can at least keep checking back to them. If not, then ignore all that, welcome and I hope you find something soon. :support:

I was wondering - do you know what kind of services are around you, specifically food banks?

What area of the world do you live in? Maybe we can assist you in getting some other resources in your area. Or at least point you in the right direction.

Hello!

In this economy I think that you may have to be a little flexible. From your post, I get the impression that you are willing to be flexible.

In your community, do a bit of research on what types of services people may need. So for instance, I live in an area where a lot of people have summer properties that remain uninhabited during the winter months. So in this kind of area, it might be a good idea to offer a flat monthly fee to look after those properties and get them ready for when the owners come back in the summer.

Are you good at helping sort out computer problems. Maybe offer your services - for a flat fee again, going into people's homes to help them fix computer problems....

Also, another idea that I've thought about around here - concierge services for busy professionals. So you advertise that you're willing to run errands for people who don't have time sometimes...

Here are just a few ideas.
