[UK] CBT practitioners on-line register
Wednesday, 26 November 2008

A NEW on-line register, CBT Register UK will give the public access to all accredited Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) practitioners in the UK.

As the leading organizations in the CBT field, the British Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) and the Association for Rational and Emotive Behavior Therapy (AREBT) have been accrediting CBT therapists since 1994.

In line with government moves to improve access to effective psychological therapies, the two organizations have now come together to form a single CBT Register UK.

It means members of the public who are looking for an accredited CBT therapist will be able to find one within just a few clicks.

More than 1,400 therapists, who are working within the NHS, private practice, or both, are accredited on the new CBT Register UK. This means they have specialist skills and knowledge, having undergone training and supervision to recognized standards.

There has been an increasing demand from the public, health professionals and health care providers for a register which lists fully qualified therapists who have achieved a high level of competence in cognitive and behavioral methods.

CBT, which is supported by extensive clinical research, is recommended as an effective treatment for a range of mental health conditions by NICE (the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence).

The Government recently announced a ?173 million Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme to improve access on the NHS to effective talking therapies such as CBT for anxiety and depression through a series of centres all over the country.

I tryed this the end of last week. I found only one therapist in my local area, she did private and NHS so I rang. If I was going private I could have had an appointment almost immediately but If I was NHS which I am I would have to see my GP and be referred and then wait. So whilst this register does bring all the accredited therapists together on one site, it certainly doesnt help in accessing them if your NHS. Its like everything else in this country if you pay your fine, if your NHS you wait.

Also, since this is a voluntary register, it won't list all available therapists - it may take time for therapists to go through the process of registration.

yes I notice there where only 17 therapists for the whole of the Midlands area which isnt many at all. Alot say direct contact with patient as a form of referral but it appears NHS still have to have a referral from elsewhere after you have made the initial call. Ive past the name of my local one onto my GP to see if he will refer me under the NHS will keep you posted on what happens with that.

In my view this article and list is misleading. I have today spoken to my DR and also the therapist who is the only one in my area. The way it works is that my GP has to have funding to pay for me, he doesnt just refer me he has to apply for funding from the NHS, or find it from funding given to his own surgery, and that funding isnt there, the therapist also said she does mainly private work because of this,, the list is more about people finding accredited therapists, its not really about what the goverment has said about getting them on the NHS, these therapists are mainly private, you might be lucky in one area if theres funding available on the NHS they may pay some or all of the cost, but the way things are here its doubtful, I see this as just another piece of propogander the goverment is putting out to make it look like anyone can access these things when they cant. Its not the first time I have read about something and then found I cannot access it due to lack of funding.
