What to Do About Hyperactivity in Children
Jessica Kingsley Publishers; $19.95 hardcover, $14.92 Kindle

Winston is a hyperactive wallaby who can’t sit still. He bounces around wherever he goes. His bouncing sometimes gets him into trouble. The story takes the reader through Winston Wallaby’s first week of school. He’s expected to sit still, pay attention, and go along with the group, but he struggles to stop bouncing. His teacher offers him sensory strategies, such as allowing him to stand to do his work, to calm his body so he can succeed in her class.

The book offers kids with ADHD (hyperactive type) a character they can relate to — someone who bounces around at home, on the furniture, at the store, and at school.

Authors K.I. Al-Ghani and Joy Beaney include a section at the end for parents, teachers, and caregivers called Coping with Hyperactivity in Children. It is full of information about sensory differences, learning styles, and activities to address a child’s sensory needs both at home and at school.
