Re: 3 Positive Things Part 5

1 - Engine burn tests... RUN... PASS. Houston we are clear for takeoff!

2 - Put 2 cups water in my Instant Pot Duo Plus 8QT. Everyone online says 1 cup of water but the safety warning in the manual says to never use the 8Qt with less that 2 cups (500ml) liquid in it. Some rules I follow unconditionally without questioning or doubting the reason why. Put steamer rack in. put 12 extra large eggs. Close, Press Eggs button twice sets it to high. Watch water boil... :facepalm:That process takes as long as any normal way since it needs to boil and raise pressure before it seals and locks. Timer automatically starts once pressure lock pops up and runs 6 minutes and beeps to let you know it's done. The manual pressure release is a bit intimidating until you've used it at least once then you know how to use it and how it reacts. Transferred to smaller pot to cool faster under running cold water. Peeled all 12 perfectly. Absolutely perfect! Not even one tiny piece came off or any shells hard to peel. And with 2 people peeling the risk of one person being lucky and having a perfect batch is cut in half. Made egg salad sandwiches with 6 and put 6 for tomorrow in fridge. Took me longer to write all this then to actually do it (minus the first time jitters)

3 - A tad more complicated the first time getting to know the machine and passing the "is it working properly and safely" testing phase but I must admit when I boil a dozen eggs the traditional way I never get a perfect peeled batch. I just use the ones that didn't peel perfectly for egg salad sandwiches. So if it can make perfect hard boiled eggs this easily and cleanly I can't wait to try it for other things. I'll keep yogurt making trials for later down the road. I did make sure I didn't have any eggs that could crack while under pressure. Not sure I want to know what mess it might possibly make.

Verdict: Best $112.00 CDN (all included) I have spent in a long time. I now understand why those that love it rave about it so much, I am officially now one of them and those that know me also know that I'm extremely sceptical (and critical) and not your regular blind fanboy type. It's an awesome machine. The heating time is the longest part of the process. 5 Stars from me.

I wonder what Daniel thinks of his recent acquisition?

Disclaimer: I have no interest or affiliation with the company or any other party involved with the Instant Pot Company and have not been paid, bribed, intimidated or harassed in any way shape or form to write these comments other than buying, trying, seeing it for myself and loving my acquisition.

  1. Homemade burger for dinner even though I didn't feel like making it.
  2. This one's a +/- but I threw out some dodgy-looking pickles that hadn't been stored according to the suggestions even though my test slice tasted ok... Because I remembered how much some of you guys flipped out about the jam. ;)
  3. Found my can opener to open the can of beetroot to put on my burger  That'll probably be the one time the can opener gets used this year :)
  4. Bonus - found something at work to be interested in for a short while today.

True  I just imagined what you'd have to say about me eating these pickles. I stand by my jam decision ;) Am 50-50 on the pickle decision... What a pickle :D

I'm glad to hear that your new pot is working out so well. Any chance of some cake to share on the forum next? ;)

I do like the Instant Pot a lot as well. I have only made brown rice so far, but since I usually buy Uncle Ben's microwave pouches, it will pay for itself. I am planning on making yogurt too and the red lentil chili recipe, black bean soup, hummus, etc.

If you were in a financial pickle I'd understand eating stuff most stray cats would bark at and walk away. Technically pickles (the strong vinegary kind) probably are way lower on the safety risk scale way past best before date than jam does.

Actually they should have 2 dates on food products:
1 - Best Before date
2 - Best not try after date

Thanks, after half were devoured I realized I didn't take a pic to post LOL
it's funny but I never even thought of making cake with it when I think back it was the thing that made me laugh "It even makes cake".

No kidding. If you guys eat rice even a couple times a week it should be paid off in no time with the rice savings alone. I'm also quite sure it'll probably taste a lot better than Uncle Ben's!

Cool,Vegan Recipes. Happy for you! I'm pretty sure I won't find anything that fits my food group preference there though ;)

I tried googling: Heart attack on a plate instant Pot recipes but sadly no luck. Will have to manually find them one by one.

Re: 3 Positive Things Part 5

Ok back on thread subject 3 Positive things. Which I really need to post to convince myself that this (Below) is not that bad

-1 - Yet another arctic blast for today and tomorrow (Just doesn't seem to want to stop this winter)
Capture.PNG

1 - "Technically" need to go to the post office to see if some things I'm waiting for are in. "Logically" not a chance in hell I'm going to go out anywhere before I really have to. (see Doc in Winnipeg on Monday) and it's "supposed" to reach a high of -13 then. Currently the snow forecast for Monday has disappeared from my screens. So, all in all, a positive.

2 - Every day that it's this cold and/or snowing makes me more and more thankful that I was able to keep the garage for the month of February.

3 - With the car parked in the garage I have been able to avoid the deep freeze and the above normal and frequent snowfall of the last while, Not having to go out to clear the snow off and start the car every couple of days so that the battery doesn't freeze is a real blessing.

Re: 3 Positive Things Part 5

1. Enjoying hot cocoa more often with the cold weather. Making it from scratch is easy.

2. Eating healthier (e.g. less processed foods) since going on my cruise. Buying more fruit, etc. and almost nothing in a box. Made chili last night in the Instant Pot with dry beans. No need to stir or monitor.

3. Reading PDFs much easier using Adobe Acrobat app on my phone/tablet instead of the built-in reader.

How’d the chili turn out? Please don’t tell me you made it vegan without ground beef!

Otherwise you’d have to rename it to “make beleive” or “pretend” it’s chili

Re: 3 Positive Things Part 5

It was good. I just used my regular recipe except this time used (soaked) dry beans instead of canned. We use Gardein-brand vegan ground "beef." Next time will use a recipe from Instant Pot's website.

Re: 3 Positive Things Part 5

Ok let’s be serious for a minute here. What you made is a chili alternate lookalike (all good there) but what you used is not ground beef! (Not saying it’s not a valid meal)

if you like it and it came out good I’m happy for you. Also nice to know your regular recipe came out ok in the instant pot. I’m not the type to say something is horrible simply because I would not eat it.

BUT and a reall big BUT I draw the line at certain things: ground beef is ground beef. Beef is cattle a 4 legged mammal that eats grass N stuff and gets fatter yielding even more pounds of delicious cuts of beef when butchered and to not waste any of the lower quality cuts and left overs some is ground up in a meat grinder producing delicious ground beef. (Can also be produced with higher quality cuts but would be technically silly) the words Ground and Beef are kind of obvious. You can’t make wine from rocks and you can’t make ground beef without BEEF! :panic:

A BLT without bacon is not a BLT it’s a tomato and lettuce sandwich. And bacon is bacon anything else is a pale attempt at imitating bacon. Even delissio pizzas now come with a vegan pizza in the same box as the regular one They hide this bland cardboard one under the real pizza which i once forgot to remove and my oven detected it and in no time at all proceeded to set ablaze. Even my oven Doesn’t want vegan food ;)

Re: 3 Positive Things Part 5

Can I interest you in mushroom chili? :coffee:

Chili con carne - Wikipedia

Vegetarian chili (also known as chili sin carne, chili without meat, chili non carne, and chili sans carne) acquired wide popularity in the U.S. during the 1960s and 1970s with the rise of vegetarianism. It is also popular with those on a diet restricting the use of red meat. To make the chili vegetarian, the cook leaves out the meat or replaces it with a meat analogue, such as textured vegetable protein or tofu, or a starchy vegetable, such as potatoes. These chilis nearly always include beans. Variants may contain corn, squash, mushrooms, or beets.

Re: 3 Positive Things Part 5

Most definitely mushrooms in chili make a great addition to the BEEF! And could not imagine my spaghetti meat sauce without a lot of them in it. But if it came down to meat or mushrooms: Sorry mushroom I love you but you just don’t match up to ground beef. Maybe next time my friend

I remember once we were having a pot luck BBQ and a friend had brought her tofu hotdog wieners along with her tofu hamburger patties and was trying to convince everyone they couldn’t taste the difference so I agreed to try before making a judgement and had a tofu hotdog and then asked her if she had ever tasted a real hotdog cause regardless of the fact I found it tasted like poop, the important fact I stated was “sorry lady but unless someone has inexistant taste buds there is no way in hell that this tastes anything like a real hot dog not even a bad no name one” Neddles to say after tasting her “can’t tell the difference” hot dog I lost any interest in submitting myself to a “tastes like the real thing” burger since if that tofu dog didn’t taste like a real dog there was no chance in hell that it would taste like a burger just because the stuff was shaped differently

Doesnt mean it ain’t good if you like it! Just I don’t buy the “tastes just like the real thing” cow dung every tofu or other meat alternative fan tries to sell me on. If they could simply leave it at “it’s a healthy alternative” I’d be fine and wouldn’t get my underwear in a bunch every time someone tries to convince me that the stuff taste like it’s intended (real) copy. Only thing that tastes like the real thing is da real thing.

Also kinder to the environment. We have to start eating a lot less beef. Beef farming is a major contributor to climate change and beef consumption is a major contributor to vascular disease and cancers of the digestive system.

Re: 3 Positive Things Part 5

I think processed food is deadlier than having red meat occasionally. Everything is about balance. More poultry, fish and pork than beef is considered healthy and safe eating. Also how it’s cooked makes a big difference.

And they keep changing what’s healthy and what’s not heart wise. I remember when eating eggs was really deadly because it has cholesterol. Why is it ok now? Did eggs mutate? pretty simple basic biological structure.

Stress and excessive exertion are the main heart attack triggers.
Colon cancers have an extremely high genetic predisposition regardless of the diet.

No. Diet, exercise, and genetics are the big predictors of vascular disease.

Only a small proportion of colon cancers are genetically based. Mine was not one of those.

Re: 3 Positive Things Part 5

My husband eats more fake meats than I do since he is repulsed by the idea of avocado and tomato sandwiches (my favorite), anything with mushrooms (except on a single slice of pizza), etc. I just now convinced him that potatoes may taste better instead of fake meat for our next veggie chili.

His doctor wants him eating more fish, but he only eats a few bites of salmon sometimes since he is so picky.

  1. I just read the start of a sentence: "It is a roadmap structured around a strategy based on our levers of transformation..." Ladies and gentlemen may I present to you the corporate turducken!
  2. Decent work task yesterday.
  3. Managed anxiety at work yesterday, and managed a low phone battery when I'd forgotten to bring my charger.
